Resources for Friends On Hill: A 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Organization

Friends On Hill was founded with a simple yet powerful goal: to bring people together and foster meaningful connections within the Bozeman community. What started as an informal initiative to offer free opportunities for individuals to meet while enjoying the beauty of the mountains has grown into something much larger. Our initial gatherings were designed for anyone to join, with no sign-ups or RSVPs required, where participants could share a chairlift ride at Bridger Bowl—connecting with locals and newcomers alike. All that was needed was a valid lift ticket or pass.

Whether they were lifelong residents of Bozeman or new to the area, Friends On Hill has provided an inclusive environment where friendships can flourish and a sense of belonging can be established.

Our Mission: Breaking Barriers, Creating Opportunities

As we continued to grow, we realized that the joy and camaraderie we shared on the mountain could be extended to even more individuals—especially those who faced financial barriers preventing them from experiencing skiing and snowboarding. This realization led us to become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and our mission evolved to focus on breaking down financial obstacles for those who would otherwise be unable to access these experiences. Friends On Hill is dedicated to providing financial scholarships for underprivileged adults in our community, covering all costs associated with learning how to ski and snowboard. These costs include lessons, equipment rentals, and lift tickets.

Through our Community Learn To Ride Program, we offer adults who lack the financial means the opportunity to learn to ski and snowboard, free of charge. Participants are grouped in small teams of four scholarship recipients, where they learn together over the course of a six-week lesson program. Paired with the same instructor, they build essential skills and forge lasting bonds as they navigate the challenges of learning together. This unique, shared experience not only empowers individuals to enjoy the mountains but also fosters personal
growth, perseverance, and community.

Education, Safety, and Community Engagement

As part of our commitment to the community, Friends On Hill also focuses on educating participants about safety and proper etiquette in the mountains. We recognize that creating an inclusive, safe environment for all is crucial, which is why we plan to partner with local organizations and businesses to host free workshops, safety classes, and community meetups. These programs will provide participants with essential knowledge, from safety protocols to mountain etiquette, ensuring everyone can enjoy the outdoors responsibly and confidently.

The Transformative Power of Snowboarding and Skiing

As lifelong snowboarders, we understand how deeply snowboarding and skiing can shape one’s life. The friendships we’ve built, the memories we’ve created, and the personal lessons we’ve learned on the mountain are invaluable. From sharing stories and laughs on the chairlift to overcoming the challenges of mastering our first turns, snowboarding has instilled in us important life skills—perseverance, problem-solving, and the confidence to keep going even after falling.

These lessons transcend the sport itself, and we want to share them with others. By providing access to skiing and snowboarding for individuals who may not have the financial means, we aim to offer more than just an opportunity to learn a sport—we aim to offer an experience that can change lives.
